Album Review: Ruston Kelly – ‘Shape & Destroy’ (For Country Universe)

I reviewed the latest album from Ruston Kelly, Shape & Destroy, over at Country Universe. Check it out here.

I must admit I struggled with this one at first. Dying Star was one of my favorite albums of 2018, and this initially scanned as a disappointment in comparison, mostly because of production issues I discuss in the review. Almost went with a lower score, but then I took a deeper listen to the lyrics and realized the man is just a compelling writer, able to take his own struggles and make them relatable and truly human. And I can tell “Under The Sun” is going to be one of my favorites of this very bleak year.

  • Favorite tracks: “Under The Sun,” “Changes,” “Mid-Morning Lament,” “Alive,” “Rubber”
  • Least favorite track: “Jubilee”
  • Rating: Decent 8/10
